Compressed NFTs and Scalability

Metaplex introduced a compressed NFT standard, reducing the costs of minting significantly by leveraging Merkle trees for off-chain data storage. This innovation ensures that NFTs maintain Solana’s security properties while minimizing blockchain storage costs. Compressed NFTs are backward-compatible with standard NFTs and can be “decompressed” as needed. This approach allows applications to mint NFTs at nearly zero cost, making it feasible for high-volume use cases such as digital collectibles, airdrops, and IoT applications.
